Running: Recovery, surgery, injury, and a return

Have you enjoyed the break from the off-topic running posts? Since finishing the Providence marathon about a month ago, I’ve had a prolonged break from any real volume of running thanks to a confluence of things: normal marathon recovery, a flare up of tendonitis in my right foot, and removal of one honking huge polyp from my sinuses.

After PVD, I would have done a four-week reverse taper to get back into regular running form (4 runs per week, long runs of 6-8 miles). But I had surgery scheduled 8 days after the marathon to remove that polyp, and wasn’t allowed to exercise at all for one week after that, and then only “50% of normal” for the 2nd week. Then while I was sitting on my butt post-surgery, peroneal tendons in my right foot flared up (WHA? All I was doing was watching bad daytime TV!). More after the jump.

So, to say I’ve slipped out of peak running form is a bit of an understatement. This recent almost-6-miler was the longest distance I’ve done since PVD, and it damn near killed me. Granted, I’d done a lot of lower-body strength work the day prior, but that run left me sore enough to think twice about sitting down for a couple days.

Hope springs eternal, however. Taking time off helped get my foot back to normal in record time, and I know I can soon be back to respectable paces and distances. So I registered this morning for two halfathons – Hampton (NH) Rockfest in September, and the Austin (TX) half marathon in February.

That will let me tick off two states toward my long-term goal of running a race in all 50 states and DC. Ever forward, as they say.

    I’m so excited to see you’re getting back to running. This means maybe we can do some long runs together in the near future. As soon as I’m cleared to run more than 5 miles. :)

    Why is it that everything happens at once? Glad to hear you are on the mend. Maybe we can plan a group run this summer?

      I have to say, being forced to forgo exercise post-surgery wasn’t too bad right after the marathon. I definitely needed the break.

      Group run sounds great! I’ll just need a few more weeks to get back into talking-while-running form.
